Start with the job. Lanyards without an energy absorber, such as the Delta Plus EN 354 rope lanyards and the Karam restraint lanyards listed to EN 354:2010, are for restraint: they keep the worker from reaching the fall hazard and must not be used on their own to arrest a fall. For fall arrest choose an energy absorbing lanyard to EN 355: Delta Plus offers single and twin leg (Y) webbing lanyards in 1 m or 2 m, and Karam offers single and twin leg lanyards in twisted rope, kernmantle rope and 44 mm webbing, listed to EN 355:2002 and, on most models, IS 3521 (Part 2):2021. Work positioning lanyards to EN 358, which Karam lists to EN 358:2018, are used with a positioning belt so the worker can lean back and work hands free; the Delta Plus EX030200 adjusts up to 2 m and the EX030400 up to 4 m, and the Karam ring, rope grab and openable rope grab adjusters go up to 2.0 m.
Then choose the legs and the length. A single leg lanyard suits work from one anchor, while a twin leg (Y) lanyard lets the worker clip the free leg to the next anchor before unclipping the other, so they stay connected while moving; Delta Plus makes twin leg webbing and rope lanyards, and Karam twin leg lanyards come in 1.5, 1.8 and 2.0 m. Karam also offers adjustable lanyards with a B-ring and expandable lanyards in elasticated 44 mm webbing that contract when slack and stretch to 2.0 m, leaving less slack to trip over, and its internal shock absorbing lanyards carry the absorber inside the webbing core with an impact indicator. Keep the lanyard as short as the work allows, and allow enough clear space below the worker for the absorber to open.
Next match the material and ends to the site. Karam builds many lanyards in twelve or fifteen end combinations, from plain loops to steel screw locking karabiners, snap hooks, steel or lighter aluminium scaffold hooks and a PN141 stainless steel anchorage hook. For harsh sites Karam offers sharp edge tested and edge safe lanyards for roof edges and structural steel, Flanil lanyards in flame retardant webbing with Kevlar stitching for welding and hot work, Nospark antistatic lanyards for static sensitive areas with ATEX 2014/34/EU listed on the 44 mm webbing models, Dienoc lanyards with dielectric hooks rated by Karam at 14 kV for work near electrical installations, and Revolta lanyards in oil repellent webbing.
Separate absorbers and tool lanyards complete the range. Karam offers a compact 300 mm energy absorber with 44 mm tear webbing and a smaller absorber with 35 mm tear webbing that Karam rates for free falls up to 4 m, both with an impact indicator, and an openable cover that shields an absorber from dirt and abrasion. To stop tools dropping from height, Delta Plus offers the HA200 tool holder lanyard (1 m, 4 kg) and the retractable HA204 (1.1 m, 0.5 kg), and Karam offers single and twin elasticated tool lanyards for tools up to 10 kg and a retractable tool lanyard that extends to 1.4 m.
