Start with the hose construction. Non percolating, rubber lined delivery hose is the usual choice for hydrant and wet riser hose boxes. Kartar Valves and Minimax list IS 636 Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 hoses: in the Minimax range Type 1 has a synthetic woven jacket, Type 2 an EPDM lining with an external elastomeric coating that guards the jacket against liquids, abrasion and heat, and Type 3 an NBR-PVC lining and cover with very low absorption of oils, greases, acids and alkalis. Savemax, Aaag and Balaji Fire Safety list their RRL (reinforced rubber lined) hoses as Type A or Type B, so check which type your specification names. Controlled percolating (CP) hose to IS 8423, from Kartar Valves, Minimax and Aaag, lets water seep evenly through the jacket so it stays wet where it passes through radiant heat.
For heavier or special duty, New Age offers ISI marked rubber lined hoses to BS 6391:2009, single jacket (Premier, also UL Listed) or coated (Premier Extra), through the weave nitrile and PVC hoses that resist oil, fuel, chemicals and kinking, a double jacketed hose made in accordance with NFPA 1961 and conforming to UL 19 for fire brigade and heavy industrial use, a self protecting forestry hose, a large diameter hose and the Pyrojet hose with brass nozzles every 1 m. For first aid hose reels, Kartar Valves offers 20 mm and 25 mm hose in rubber to IS 444 or thermoplastic to IS 12585, and Balaji Fire Safety lists 19 mm and 25 mm hose reel hose, both in 30 m lengths.
Then match size, length and pressure. Most hydrant hoses here are 63 mm, with Aaag RRL and CP hose offered from 38 to 100 mm and New Age hoses from 25 mm to 152 mm. Minimax supplies 7.5, 15 and 30 m lengths and Kartar Valves, Savemax and Balaji Fire Safety 15 m and 30 m, with Savemax suggesting 15 m for floor level hose boxes in buildings. Aaag lists its Type A RRL and CP hoses at 14 bar working, 21 bar test and 35 bar burst pressure, and Minimax its Type 1 and CP hoses at 14 kgf/cm2 working, 21.4 kgf/cm2 proof and 35.7 kgf/cm2 burst.
Couplings must match on both sides of every joint. Instantaneous couplings to IS 903 come from Kartar Valves, Minimax, Aaag and Balaji Fire Safety, ISI marked on most models, in gunmetal, stainless steel, aluminium or brass, and New Age makes its instantaneous couplings to BS 336 and IS 903. For equipment built to other systems, New Age and Aaag offer Storz couplings, Aaag a Nunan coupling and New Age Russian GOST and American rocker lug couplings, plus adaptors between instantaneous, BSP, round thread and flange ends, international shore connections, reducing couplings and blank caps. Kartar Valves and Minimax bind couplings to the hose with copper wire (Kartar uses SS wire for SS couplings), and Savemax supplies its RRL hose with stainless steel couplings already fitted.
