How to choose
Start with the body material. Forged brass, bronze and gunmetal valves suit small bore water lines: Kartar Valves offers forged brass (K916, K611, K611E) and gunmetal (K609) valves, Sant Valves forged brass FBV valves and the gun metal IS-20 for water and oil, and Zoloto bronze (1008, 1008A) and chrome finished forged brass (1008B) valves listed for plumbing and fire fighting. Cast iron valves follow IS 9890: the Sant Valves CI-17 and CI-18 are ISI marked to IS 9890 Class 125 and listed for water, oil and gas, the red Kartar Valves K-938 for fire lines is ISI marked to IS 9890, and the Kartar Valves K801 and K802 are made to IS 9890 in PN 16. Stainless steel valves in CF8 (SS 304) or CF8M (SS 316) from all three makers are chosen where corrosion resistance matters, and the Sant Valves WCB cast steel valve is rated 69 barg at 30°C and 5 bar at 225°C.
Next check size and pressure, choosing a rating that covers the highest pressure in that line. Sizes run from 8 mm (Sant Valves FBV2 and IS-20, Zoloto 1008B) or 10 mm (Kartar Valves forged brass) up to 100 mm. Kartar Valves rates its forged brass valves PN 40 and the gunmetal K609 PN1.6, rates the stainless steel K804 WOG 1000 and the K804.E PN 40, and states its cast iron K801 and K802 can be installed at up to 35 bar. Then match the ends and bore. Screwed valves come with threads to IS 554, BS 21 or ISO 7 or BSP taper, with NPT on request from Kartar Valves, and the Zoloto 1080A and 1081 can also have socket weld ends. Flanged options include the Kartar Valves K802 with flange dimensions to ANSI B16.1, the Sant Valves CI-18 (IS 3516 or B.S.10 Table F) and SSBVF (Class-150), and the Zoloto 1080B and 1081A drilled to ASME B16.5 Class 150. Should I choose a full bore or reduced bore ball valve?
