Class D Fire Extinguisher for Metal Fires in Bhopal

Burning metals such as magnesium, aluminium, lithium, sodium and titanium react violently with water and ordinary agents, so they need a Class D extinguisher with a powder made for the metal. Here are 10 models from Ceasefire, Kanex and Minimax, compared side by side.

Class D metal fire extinguishers compared: all 10 models

Figures as each maker publishes them. Fire ratings are to IS 15683, or EN 3 where marked: F for cooking oil and fat, A for wood and paper, B for flammable liquids; a higher number means a larger test fire put out. Class D powders for metal fires carry no number rating.

Where a Class D Class D metal fire extinguisher is used

Across the 10 models here, as their makers list them: full weight about 6.6 to 14 kg, height about 440 to 615 mm and discharge time about 13 to 30 seconds.

The powder is laid gently over the burning metal from an applicator or a low velocity nozzle, to cover it and cut off air without scattering it. Light metals (magnesium, lithium, sodium, potassium) and heavy metals (titanium, lead, zinc, copper) burn differently, and Ceasefire makes a powder for each: SPM Tec for light metals and SPM Pyro for heavy metals.

Kanex fills its units with sodium chloride or TEC powder and fits a hose and applicator, so the operator stays away from the heat and fumes, and Minimax offers a 10 kg TEC powder unit with a lance-like nozzle that lays the powder without splashing the metal.

How to choose

Tell us the metal you handle and how: chips, turnings, powder or solid parts. The right powder depends on the metal, and a Class D unit should be kept beside the metal work, not at the general fire point.

Frequently asked questions

Can an ABC extinguisher be used on a metal fire?
No. Ordinary powders, water, foam and CO2 can make a metal fire worse. Use a Class D unit with a powder made for that metal.
What is a D type fire extinguisher?
It is another name for a Class D extinguisher: D is the fire class for burning metals. Its powder stays on the burning metal, covers it and cuts off the air.
Which Class D powder do I need?
It depends on the metal. Ceasefire SPM Tec is for light metals such as magnesium, lithium and sodium, and SPM Pyro for heavy metals such as titanium, lead, zinc and copper. Kanex offers sodium chloride or TEC powder, and Minimax TEC powder for reactive metals. Tell us the metal and we will match the unit.
Is a Class D extinguisher used for lithium-ion batteries?
No. It is for burning lithium metal, not for lithium-ion batteries. For phone, EV and UPS batteries, see lithium-ion battery fire extinguishers.
What is the price of a Class D fire extinguisher in Bhopal?
It depends on the agent, the body and the quantity, and makers change their price lists often, so we quote each order instead of listing prices. Send the size, the brand if you have one in mind, and the quantity on WhatsApp at +91 92440 89060 and we will reply with the current price. Every supply is billed on a GST invoice.
Does a Class D fire extinguisher need refilling?
Yes. It must be refilled after every use, even a short burst, and checked regularly: the seal should be intact, the service label in date and, on stored pressure units, the gauge needle in the green band. We refill and test kitchen and special extinguishers of every brand in Bhopal, see fire extinguisher refilling.
How many Class D fire extinguishers does my building need?
That depends on the floor area, the kind of fire risk and the rules that apply to the building: IS 2190, the National Building Code and, for a Fire NOC, the MP Fire Department. Our engineers work it out on a free site visit in Bhopal and tell you the number, size and type for each floor.
