A water mist system breaks water into droplets so fine that they soak up heat fast, turn to steam and push oxygen away from the fire, using little water and leaving no chemicals to clean up. The finer the droplet, the faster it absorbs heat. Ceasefire lists its Auto-Quell droplets below 70 microns for generator areas, below 100 microns indoors and below 120 microns around transformers. The droplets turn to steam on contact with the fire, which cools it and keeps oxygen away.
Because so little water is used, damage is low and the area is back in use quickly: Ceasefire states its Indoor Auto-Quell uses about 20 percent of the water of a conventional water based system. The mist also screens people from radiated heat.
