Start with how the concentrate is proportioned. Inline inductors draw concentrate into the water stream without a foam pump and suit fixed systems with a constant flow: HD Fire offers 65 to 150 mm units, and New Age fixed units in 2 to 8 inch, a UL Listed stainless steel unit and a portable unit adjustable from 0% to 6%. Bladder tanks hold concentrate in a rubber bladder that water pressure squeezes through a ratio controller, so they also need no foam pump; HD Fire tanks are made to ASME Code Section VIII Div I for 175 psi (12.1 bar) and come with multiple proportioners for several hazard zones, as a dual tank skid with a standby reserve, or with a pre-piped deluge valve. For large or varying flows, balanced pressure systems add a foam concentrate pump: HD Fire offers a UL Listed ILBP and a skid mounted system for 270 to 18500 lpm, and New Age a UL Listed, sea water compatible proportioner for 110 LPM to 17500 LPM.
For storage tanks, pick the discharge device by roof type. On fixed cone roof tanks, foam chambers and foam makers with a vapour seal lay foam onto the liquid surface: HD Fire foam chambers (Type II under NFPA 11) cover 100 to 1800 lpm, and New Age UL Listed foam makers with a vapour seal chamber cover 75 LPM to 2700 LPM in five models. On floating roof tanks, foam goes to the rim seal: HD Fire offers foam makers with foam pourers and a 65 NB rim seal pourer that shields the foam from wind, and New Age offers foam makers without a vapour seal chamber. For subsurface injection into hydrocarbon tanks, the New Age high back pressure foam maker discharges against a back pressure of up to 40% of its inlet pressure.
For spills, bunds, hand lines and overhead protection, choose by expansion ratio and delivery. New Age FB series low expansion branch pipes give ratios of 1:2 to 1:12 and come self inducting at a fixed 3% or 6% or for premix, and HD Fire BP225 and BP450 aluminium branch pipes are UL Listed and FM Approved. New Age medium expansion generators (225 or 450 LPM) give large volumes of free flowing foam for bunded or dyked areas, and its high expansion generators reach 1:200 to 1:350 (Mini Turbex) or 1:400 to 1:1100 (wheel mounted MK2). Foam-water sprinklers discharge foam from overhead and then water: the HD Fire nozzle has a K-factor of 2.95 for 2.1 to 4.2 bar, and the Tyco Model B-1 is a bronze K3.0 outlet, UL and ULC Listed.
Where fire vehicles cannot reach, a mobile foam unit gives a quick first attack. HD Fire MF-A (160 litres, fibreglass) and MF-S (stainless steel, up to 180 litres) carts run at 225 or 450 lpm with an FM Approved inductor and branch pipe, and HD Fire also offers a wheeled bladder tank unit with a 2.5 inch proportioner. New Age offers stainless steel or FRP tank carts in 100, 150 and 200 litres and a fast attack cart with a monitor for up to 300 GPM at 100 psi. Finally, check approvals model by model: HD Fire ties some listings to named foam concentrates, as on its IE225 and IE450 portable inductors, so FPS matches the concentrate to the listing on your system.
