Inert Gas Fire Suppression System (IG-541, IG-55) in Bhopal

An inert gas system protects a room with gases taken from the air, nitrogen, argon and a little CO2, which bring the oxygen down below the level a fire needs while leaving enough for people to get out. They leave no residue, have zero ozone depletion and zero global warming potential, and one cylinder bank can protect several rooms. FPS supplies and installs inert gas systems from Ceasefire, HD Fire and Honeywell.

How inert gas puts out a fire

Air holds about 21 percent oxygen. An inert gas system floods the room until the oxygen falls to between about 10 and 14 percent, the range Honeywell lists for IG-541: too little for most fires to keep burning, but enough for people to leave during the discharge.

The names say what is in the cylinder: IG-01 is argon, IG-100 is nitrogen, IG-55 is half argon and half nitrogen, and IG-541 is 52 percent nitrogen, 40 percent argon and 8 percent CO2. The gases come from the air and go back to it.

The trade off is space. Inert gas is stored as a compressed gas at 200 or 300 bar, so it needs more cylinders than a clean agent for the same room. In return, one cylinder bank with selector valves can protect several rooms.

Inert gas systems we supply

Ceasefire offers inert gas systems with CO2, nitrogen, argon or blends of them, VdS approved and scalable up to 240 cylinders. HD Fire HD-INERTSYS works with IG55, IG541, IG100 and IG01 in 80 and 140 litre cylinders at 200 or 300 bar, with selector valves so one bank covers several areas. Honeywell IG-541 comes as a stand-alone system for one space or a multi zone system, FM approved and UL listed.

Honeywell IG-541 Inert Gas Fire Suppression System

IG-541Inert gas200 and 300 bar

Sizes: 30 L, 50 L, 80 L, 140 L

An inert gas system that puts out class A, B and C fires by lowering the oxygen level in the room, using a blend of 52% nitrogen, 40% argon and 8% CO2. It comes as a stand-alone system for one space or as a multi-zone system.

How to choose

Inert gas suits large rooms and sites with several rooms to protect, where space can be set aside for a cylinder bank. For one small room, a clean agent system usually takes less space.

Plan for pressure relief: as the gas floods in, the room pressure rises, so a pressure relief damper is fitted to the wall. Honeywell includes them in its stand-alone kit.

We design the system, size the cylinder bank, the selector valves and the relief vents, install and commission it, and maintain it under an AMC.

Frequently asked questions

What is IG-541?
A blend of 52 percent nitrogen, 40 percent argon and 8 percent CO2. It lowers the oxygen in the room below the level a fire needs while leaving enough for people to leave.
Is an inert gas system safe for people?
Honeywell presents its IG-541 system as non-toxic and suited to occupied spaces, and Ceasefire says its system leaves enough oxygen for life. The release panel counts down before the discharge so everyone can leave.
Inert gas or clean agent?
Inert gas needs more cylinders but suits large rooms and several rooms from one bank, with no effect on the ozone layer or the climate. A clean agent needs less space for one room. See clean agent fire suppression systems.
Why does an inert gas room need a pressure relief vent?
A large volume of gas enters the room in a short time and raises the pressure. A relief damper lets the excess out so walls, doors and ceilings are not damaged.
How much does it cost?
It depends on the volume to protect, the agent, the number of zones and the release panel, so we quote after a free site survey. Send the room size and what it holds on WhatsApp at +91 92440 89060. Every supply is billed on a GST invoice.
