2 kg and 3 kg CO2 fire extinguishers compared: all 12 models

Figures as each maker publishes them. CO2 units carry B ratings for flammable liquids, to IS 15683 or EN 3 where marked: a higher number means a larger test fire put out. CO2 has no rating for wood and paper (Class A) fires.

Where a 2 kg CO2 fire extinguisher is used

Across the 12 models here, as their makers list them: full weight about 4.7 to 13 kg, height about 545 to 620 mm, discharge time about 8 to 13 seconds and throw about 2 to 3 m.

CO2 works by pushing oxygen away from the fire, so it is used where powder would damage equipment: electrical panels, UPS rooms, server racks and control rooms. It has no rating for wood and paper fires, so most buildings keep it next to an ABC unit, not instead of one.

The gas is held as a liquid in a high pressure cylinder, so a CO2 unit weighs far more than an ABC unit of the same capacity.

  • Electrical panels and MCC rooms
  • UPS, battery and server rooms
  • Control rooms and labs
  • Offices, beside an ABC unit
  • Small generator rooms
  • Oil and paint stores, as a second unit

How to choose

Kanex makes its RQ series with a wheel type valve or a squeeze grip valve, and Kanex and Minimax offer aluminium bodies that are lighter to carry: Kanex lists about 6 kg full for its aluminium HQ 2 kg unit against 9.5 to 10.5 kg for its steel RQ unit.

Most 2 kg units are rated 21B or 34B, and Kanex lists 13B for its aluminium unit. The 3 kg units from Kanex and Minimax are rated 34B.

Frequently asked questions

Can a CO2 fire extinguisher be used on electrical fires?
Yes. CO2 does not conduct electricity and leaves no residue, which is why it is the usual choice for electrical panels and server rooms. Switch the supply off if you can, hold the unit by its handle, not the horn, which gets very cold, and do not use it in a small closed room with people inside, because CO2 pushes out the oxygen.
What is the price of a 2 kg CO2 fire extinguisher in Bhopal?
It depends on the brand, the body (steel or aluminium), the valve type and the quantity, and makers change their price lists often, so we quote each order instead of listing prices. Send the size, the brand if you have one in mind, and the quantity on WhatsApp at +91 92440 89060 and we will reply with the current price. Every supply is billed on a GST invoice.
Does a 2 kg CO2 fire extinguisher need refilling?
Yes, after every use, and it is checked by weight rather than a gauge, because CO2 is stored as a liquid: a unit that has lost charge is refilled. We refill, weigh and test CO2 extinguishers of every brand in Bhopal, see fire extinguisher refilling.
How many 2 kg CO2 fire extinguishers does my building need?
That depends on the floor area, the kind of fire risk and the rules that apply to the building: IS 2190, the National Building Code and, for a Fire NOC, the MP Fire Department. Our engineers work it out on a free site visit in Bhopal and tell you the number, size and type for each floor.
