CO2 (carbon dioxide) is a clean gas agent. It is discharged as a white cloud of snow that smothers the fire by displacing oxygen, then leaves no residue and no powder to clean up. It is electrically non conductive, which is why it suits live electrical equipment, and it is effective on Class B flammable liquid fires. Because wind and drafts scatter the discharge, CO2 works best indoors.
Match the size to the risk and to who will use it. A 2 kg unit is easy to carry and suits a single panel or a small room; 3 kg and 4.5 kg cover larger rooms. For big plant rooms and open shop floors, the mobile trolley units of 6.5 kg, 9 kg and 22.5 kg give a longer discharge, around 20 seconds, and a throw of about 3 m on the first size listed.
Understand the fire rating. A rating such as 21B or 55B is the size of a test fire of flammable liquid that the extinguisher can put out; a higher number means a bigger test fire. Kanex portable CO2 units in the RQ series are rated 21B and the aluminium HQ series 13 B, while the mobile CO2 units are rated 55B.
Choose the valve and body to suit handling. Squeeze type valves are operated with a lever grip; wheel type valves are turned open by a hand wheel. Aluminium bodies are lighter than manganese steel bodies and give longer life, which helps where staff have to carry the unit.
