Start with what is burning. Ordinary ABC powder or water extinguishers are aimed at paper, wood, liquid and electrical fires. Lithium-ion cells behave differently: they hold high energy in a small pack, react badly to heat and can flare up on failure. The Kanex AVD unit is made for this risk, so it is chosen to sit alongside your existing extinguishers, not to replace all of them.
Pick the size by the amount of battery on site. A 1 or 2 litre unit suits a small office, a charging point or a vehicle mount. A 6 or 9 litre unit suits factory floors, battery stores and larger charging bays. The 1 litre model carries a 3A fire rating, meaning it has been tested on Class A solid fuel fires such as wood and paper.
All four sizes are stored pressure, which means the extinguishing liquid and the nitrogen propellant sit inside the same cylinder and the unit fires as soon as the safety pin is pulled and the lever is pressed. Check the pressure gauge on a routine walk round and get the unit refilled after any use.
