Figures as each maker publishes them. CO2 units carry B ratings for flammable liquids, to IS 15683 or EN 3 where marked: a higher number means a larger test fire put out. CO2 has no rating for wood and paper (Class A) fires.

Where a 4.5 kg CO2 fire extinguisher is used

Across the 10 models here, as their makers list them: full weight about 12.3 to 18.9 kg, height about 515 to 825 mm, discharge time about 9 to 21 seconds and throw about 2 to 4 m.

A 4.5 kg unit carries more than twice the gas of a 2 kg unit and most models are rated 55B. Because the gas is held at high pressure in a thick walled cylinder it is heavy, so check where it will hang and who will lift it.

How to choose

Aluminium bodies from Kanex and Minimax are lighter: Kanex lists 12.3 kg full for its aluminium 4.5 kg unit, while its steel RQ units are listed at 13.5 to 18.5 kg. Kanex RQ units come with a wheel type or a squeeze grip valve.

Ceasefire's EN approved range offers a 5 kg size instead of 4.5 kg, for projects that ask for EN 3 approved units.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a CO2 fire extinguisher so heavy?
The gas is stored as a liquid at high pressure, so the cylinder needs thick walls. Steel 4.5 kg units weigh well over twice their charge when full; aluminium bodies from Kanex and Minimax are lighter.
What is the price of a 4.5 kg CO2 fire extinguisher in Bhopal?
It depends on the brand, the body (steel or aluminium), the valve type and the quantity, and makers change their price lists often, so we quote each order instead of listing prices. Send the size, the brand if you have one in mind, and the quantity on WhatsApp at +91 92440 89060 and we will reply with the current price. Every supply is billed on a GST invoice.
Does a 4.5 kg CO2 fire extinguisher need refilling?
Yes, after every use, and it is checked by weight rather than a gauge, because CO2 is stored as a liquid: a unit that has lost charge is refilled. We refill, weigh and test CO2 extinguishers of every brand in Bhopal, see fire extinguisher refilling.
How many 4.5 kg CO2 fire extinguishers does my building need?
That depends on the floor area, the kind of fire risk and the rules that apply to the building: IS 2190, the National Building Code and, for a Fire NOC, the MP Fire Department. Our engineers work it out on a free site visit in Bhopal and tell you the number, size and type for each floor.
