How to choose

Start with the hazard. For dust, chips and flying particles, an open spectacle such as the ES001, ES005, ES017 or Frontier FT101 is enough. For liquid or chemical splashes, choose a sealed goggle with a soft PVC rim, such as the ES008, ES009, Frontier FT121 or FT161, which closes the gap around the eyes. Where the whole face is at risk, from splashes, debris or grinding, use a face shield such as the ES51 or ES52, or a Frontier FT171 visor on a cap frame.

For welding and hot work, the lens must filter infrared light. The ES003 has an IR-5 lens for gas welding, furnaces and molten metal; the ES004 goggle has an IR-11 window for electric arc welding that flips up for a clear view between welds. The IR number is the shade of the filter: the higher the number, the darker the lens. The ES61 and helmet mountable ES71 welding shields are stated to EN 175:1997, the European standard for eye and face protection during welding. Check the shade your welding process calls for before you order.

Then check the standards your site asks for. EN 166 is the European standard for personal eye protection, and most Karam models here are stated to EN 166:2001. Several also carry IS 8521(Part1):2022 and conform to ANSI Z 87.1, the American standard for eye and face protection. EN 170 covers ultraviolet filters and EN 172 sunglare filters; Karam lists these on some models. Optical class 1, listed on many lenses, is the top optical quality class under EN 166 and suits all-day wear.

Finally, think about fit and comfort. Workers who wear prescription glasses can use the ES007 or Frontier FT141 over-spectacles, or goggles that fit over glasses such as the ES008, ES009, FT131 and FT161. Anti-fog lenses (ES017, ES018, ES019, ES009, FT121) help in humid or misty conditions, and adjustable temples or headbands give a steadier fit. Frequently asked questions

Which Karam goggles protect against chemical splashes?
The ES008, ES009, Frontier FT121 and Frontier FT161 have a soft PVC rim that seals around the eyes, with ventilation designed to let air in while keeping liquid out. The FT131 also protects against liquid and chemical splashes and adds a flip-up window.
Can I wear Karam safety eyewear over my prescription glasses?
Yes. The ES007 and Frontier FT141 are over-spectacles made to fit over most prescription glasses, and the ES008, ES009, FT131 and FT161 goggles can also be worn over glasses.
Which Karam eyewear is for welding?
The ES003 spectacles have an IR-5 lens for gas welding and molten metal, and the ES004 goggles have an IR-11 flip-up window for electric arc welding. For face coverage there are the ES61 and helmet mountable ES71 welding shields, and the Frontier FT171 visor in its IR5 version.
What does EN 166 mean on Karam spectacles and face shields?
EN 166 is the European standard for personal eye protection, covering things like optical quality and impact resistance. Karam states most of these models to EN 166:2001; the Frontier FT171 visor and FT171(02) frame are listed at Level B impact, which is the medium energy level in that standard.
Can a Karam face shield be fitted to a safety helmet?
Karam states that the ES51 face shield mounts onto its Shelmet, Sheltek and Shelblast helmets, and the ES71 welding shield is made to be helmet mounted. The Frontier FT171(01) aluminium cap frame has a coil spring attachment that fits most safety caps and helmets.
