An anchor device gives a harness user a secure point to connect to. Karam lists most of these products to EN 795:2012, the European standard for anchor devices, and many also to IS 3521(Part 7):2021, AS/NZS 5532:2013 or ANSI Z359.18. The EN 795 type tells you how the anchor works: Type A anchors, such as point anchors, flange anchors and roof posts, are fixed to the structure with bolts, rivets or adhesive; Type B anchors, such as beam clamps, beam trolleys, parapet, door and container anchors, straps and wire rope slings, are portable and need no fixing to the structure; Type C covers flexible horizontal lifelines and Type D rigid horizontal rails.
Next, check strength and the number of users. Karam gives a minimum breaking strength in kN (kilonewtons, a unit of force) for each anchor: 23 kN on the point anchors, beam anchors, trolleys, parapet anchors and wire rope slings, 15 kN on the edge anchor, container post, door anchor and most roof posts, 12 kN on the concrete, chemical and small flange anchors, and 18 kN for 3 minutes on the webbing straps. Where more than one person will use the same anchor or line, look for TS 16415:2013, the European specification for anchor devices used by several people at once: Karam lists the SA10 and SA10A for up to 4 users, the SA09 for up to 3, the PN802 door anchor for up to 2, and its Horizon lines for 2, 4 or up to 6 users.
For short jobs, a temporary horizontal lifeline is rigged between two strong points and packed away afterwards: the Horizon PN3000(BC) webbing line for 2 users up to 20m, the Horizon kernmantle rope lines for 2 or 4 users, and the PN4001N Handy Line with a retractable line in a compact housing. For climbing on a rope, Karam's guided type fall arresters (rope grabs) to EN 353-2:2002 travel with the user on a flexible anchorage line and lock onto it if the user falls. Permanent sites use fixed systems: Vertex vertical lines on a rigid cable or aluminium rail to EN 353-1:2014+A1:2017 for ladders, towers and chimneys, and Horizon PN4000 cable and PN5000 rail lines for roofs, cranes and gantries.
Roof lifelines need posts and fixings that match the roof sheet. Karam makes extremity, intermediate and corner posts for trapezoidal and standing seam roofs, some with constant force energy absorbers that deploy in a fall to protect the roof sheet, plus Klip Lok clamps, brackets, FRP walkways to EN 516:2006 Class 1 and aluminium steps. Note the sheet pitch, seam spacing or seam bulb size before you ask for posts.
