Start with the hazard. EN 388 is the European standard for gloves against mechanical risks such as abrasion, cut, tear and puncture, and most Karam gloves here are stated to it. Under EN 388:2016, cut resistance is also graded by the ISO 13997 (TDM) test as a letter from A to F, with F the highest. Karam lists level B for HS46, level C for HS53, FT501 and the HS702 sleeves, level D for HS65DD and level F for HS82; the ANSI A numbers (A2, A3, A6) are the American cut scale, where a higher number also means more cut resistance. When cut is the main risk, pick a liner of HPPE (high performance polyethylene), glass fibre, steel or para-aramid such as Kevlar.
Then pick the coating for the grip you need. Crinkle latex grips rough, dry or wet items such as bricks and tiles; thin PU (polyurethane) keeps a close feel for assembly and inspection, and some Karam PU gloves are low lint for electronics and pharma work; nitrile holds its grip on oily parts, and the nitrile sponge, micro foam and sandy finishes are made for wet or oily handling. A palm coating with an open back keeps hands cooler, while fully coated gloves keep oil and liquid off the whole hand. Gauge is the fineness of the knit: 13 and 15 gauge liners are thin for fingertip feel, 7 and 10 gauge are thicker.
For chemicals, look for EN ISO 374-1. Type A is the stronger rating, passed against more of the standard test chemicals than Type B, and the letters after it (for example AJKLPT) are the codes of the chemicals tested. EN ISO 374-5 covers micro-organisms, with VIRUS shown where the virus test is also passed, and EN ISO 374-4 covers degradation by chemicals. Karam's Type A gloves here are HS151, FT551, HS161, HS171 and HS202(16); the HS501 to HS504 disposable nitrile gloves are Type B, in 3.2, 4, 6 and 8 mil thickness (a mil is a thousandth of an inch). The FT452 and FT453 PVC gloves protect against mild acids and alkalis as Karam states, and the FT552 household gloves have no standard listed.
For heat and welding, EN 407 covers thermal risks and EN 12477 is the standard for welders' gloves. Karam's Frontier split leather gloves and sleeves are rated for heat up to 100°C for 15 seconds, the FT822(P) for 250°C and the double palm FT821(P)(BE/YW) for 350°C, each for 15 seconds. Knitted Kevlar and para-aramid gloves and sleeves give cut and contact heat protection without leather.
