How to choose

Start with the hose the branch pipe goes on. For hydrant and wet riser hoses, the basic item is a branch pipe with a 63 mm male instantaneous inlet and a smooth bore nozzle that throws a concentrated jet. Minimax makes its short branch pipe to IS:903 with a 20 mm bore nozzle and tests it at 21 kgf/sq.cm for 150 seconds, Kartar Valves supplies its branch pipe with nozzle to IS 903 with the ISI mark, Aaag's ISI approved short branch pipes and its long branch pipe take 6, 12, 16, 20 or 25 mm tips, and New Age offers 15, 20 or 25 mm tips with instantaneous, BSP, NPT, NH or Storz inlets. Savemax's stainless steel branch pipe fits standard 63 mm RRL hose couplings, and Balaji Fire Safety lists short branch pipes in stainless steel, aluminium, brass or gunmetal for 7 bar working pressure.

Where the user must control the stream, choose a nozzle with shut off. Triple purpose nozzles from Aaag (to IS 2871, 500 LPM at 7 bar), New Age and Balaji Fire Safety give a jet, spray and shut off, and fog nozzles to IS 952 from New Age and Aaag switch between a solid jet and a dense fog. Handline and pistol grip nozzles add flow control: Aaag's Select-O-Flow and Select-O-Max nozzles have five selectable flows between 150 and 600 LPM at 7 bar, Savemax's Select-O-Flow comes in 560 and 950 LPM ratings, HD Fire's model CG works at 3.5 to 7 bar with NH, BS336 or Storz inlets, and New Age's pistol grip range includes constant pressure and constant flow nozzles compliant with NFPA 1964 and high pressure models for use up to 40 bar and 100 bar.

For first aid hose reels, pick a nozzle that matches the hose bore: Aaag's hose reel nozzles fit 19 mm or 25 mm hose in gunmetal, stainless steel or ABS, Minimax's 20 mm nozzle in ABS or gunmetal is crimped to the hose and rated 10 bar, Kartar Valves offers PVC or brass 3/4 inch shut off nozzles, and Balaji Fire Safety lists 20 mm and 25 mm shut off nozzles. Special purpose nozzles include water curtain nozzles that throw a wall of water to shield an area (Aaag, up to 900 LPM, and New Age's 180 degree curtain nozzle), revolving nozzles to IS 906 from New Age and Aaag, Aaag's piercing nozzle for fires inside closed spaces and fog applicator for ships, and New Age's UL Listed spray nozzle, made and tested to UL-40.

For flammable liquid risks, a foam making branch pipe mixes foam solution with air at the end of a hose: Savemax and Balaji Fire Safety offer FB 5X and FB 10X models, rated by Balaji at 225 and 450 LPM, and Savemax adds self inducting nozzles in 300 and 600 LPM, a 1750 LPM foam barrel, aqua foam nozzles in 63 mm and 75 mm and a high expansion foam generator.
