Sprinkler monitoring devices tell the fire alarm panel what the sprinkler system is doing. A waterflow detector signals when water starts to flow in the pipe, which normally means a sprinkler head has opened. A supervisory switch watches a control valve and signals if the valve is moved away from its open position, so a closed valve does not go unnoticed.
For waterflow on steel pipe, choose the WFD model that matches the pipe size: WFD20 for 2 inch, WFD25 for 2½ inch, WFD30-2 for 3 inch, WFD40 for 4 inch, WFD50 for 5 inch, WFD60 for 6 inch and WFD80 for 8 inch. They suit schedule 10 through 40 steel pipe, mount vertically or horizontally, and have a mechanical retard that reduces false alarms from pressure surges or trapped air. For small branch lines, the WFDT vane-type detector fits any tee with a 1 inch NPT branch, including threaded ferrous and brass tees, copper sweat tees, named brands of 1 inch CPVC tees and 1½ inch polybutylene tees.
For valve supervision, match the switch to the valve. The PIB-V2 suits post indicator, butterfly, wall post, recessed wall post and pressure reducing valves, and its bi-directional actuator works with rising or falling flag installations. The OSY2 is made for outside screw and yoke (OS&Y) gate valves from 1 to 12 inch, with an adjustable shaft and a wide bracket span for awkward valves.
