A water curtain, or drencher, puts a sheet of water across an opening so that fire and heat cannot pass through it. It is used where a fire wall cannot be built: large openings between floors, escalators, rolling shutters, windows close to another building, and gaps between plant. FPS designs, supplies, installs and maintains water curtain systems in Bhopal and across Madhya Pradesh, with nozzles from Tyco, HD Fire, Kartar Valves and Aaag.

Open curtain nozzles are set in a line along the top or bottom of the opening. Their deflectors spread the water flat, in a semicircular sheet, so the nozzles overlap into a continuous curtain. The water takes up and reflects radiant heat, cools the smoke and wets the surfaces on the protected side.
The nozzles are fed through a deluge valve, opened automatically by the fire alarm or by heat detectors near the opening, or by hand. Window sprinklers do a similar job on glazing: closed heads on the sprinkler system wet the whole glass so it holds back the fire, and open exposure sprinklers spray the outside of windows that face another building.
In India these systems are often called drenchers. A curtain on its own does not stop smoke, so it is planned together with the building's smoke control and fire alarm.
Aaag curtain nozzles in brass or stainless steel spread a flat semicircular curtain, K 23 to 72, for up to 10 bar, pendent over windows or horizontal to divide an area. HD Fire CN and CNS nozzles are UL Listed in K20 to K79, and its stainless steel JCS jumbo nozzle throws a large curtain upward from a flanged end. Kartar makes brass curtain nozzles in heavy and medium versions.

Start with the opening: its width and height set the number of nozzles and their spacing, and the K factor and pressure set the water each one gives. The curtain must cover the full width, with overlap at the ends.
Decide the release: automatic from the fire alarm or heat detectors next to the opening, with a manual release beside it, through one deluge valve per curtain or zone.
