Special application sprinklers are tested and listed for one kind of space or condition, and must be installed exactly as their data sheet says. Start with the space. In sloped attics, the BB, SD and HIP attic sprinklers throw long, narrow patterns along the roof, so in many cases fewer branch lines are needed than with standard spray sprinklers, and the AP covers attic areas outside their scope. For concealed spaces, the CC3 is a quick response upright sprinkler for light hazard combustible and non-combustible voids, on CPVC or steel pipe. For glazing, the WS (glass bulb) and CWS (concealed, solder link) window sprinklers are listed to wet the whole surface of heat strengthened, tempered or ceramic glass windows.
For prisons and similar buildings, the TFP PH2 (pendent), TFP PH5 (horizontal sidewall) and RAVEN models are tamper resistant, with flush designs that hide most or all of the working parts. The FSC is a quick response flush pendent for poured concrete or suspended ceilings, approved by VdS for CEA 4001 or EN 12845 systems. The TY-FRFS and TY-FS flat spray sprinklers, also for CEA 4001 and EN 12845 work, have a flatter pattern for low clearance above suspended open ceilings and in racks.
Conventional, or old style, sprinklers (Series TY-B and TY-FRB) throw about half their water up and half down. NFPA permits them where special construction needs that pattern, in fur vaults, or to replace similar sprinklers installed before 1955. The TY-B uses a 5 mm bulb and is standard response; the TY-FRB uses a 3 mm bulb and is quick response; TFP663 covers a VdS approved TY-B with a 4 mm bulb and special response.
For corrosive atmospheres, choose the TY-B and TY-FRB in stainless steel, SMO or titanium, the polyester coated Poly-Stainless versions, or the stainless steel TY-L; Tyco advises checking the material against the actual chemicals, temperatures and gas velocities on site. For high ambient temperatures, the Issue D Quartzoid comes in 204°C, 260°C and 343°C ratings. FPS supplies, installs and maintains Tyco sprinklers in Bhopal and across Madhya Pradesh.
