A dry-type sprinkler is built on a sealed extension, so water stays back in the heated pipe or fitting until the sprinkler opens. That lets the head sit inside a freezer or an unheated space while the pipe feeding it stays where it cannot freeze. Tyco describes three typical uses: pendent drops from the unheated parts of a dry pipe system, sprinklers or pipe ends exposed to freezing (drops into freezers, sprigs into unheated attics, pipes through a wall to loading docks, overhangs and building exteriors), and systems that are drained for part of the year.
Choose the K-factor and coverage. The DS-1, DS-C and DS-ECC have a K-factor of 5.6, the DS-8 has 8.0 and the DS-2 and DS-3 have 11.2; the higher the K-factor, the more water at a given pressure. Most models are standard coverage, while the DS-1 sidewall in TFP520, the DS-ECC, the DS-2 in TFP540 and the DS-3 are extended coverage, which means each head is listed for a larger area. Response is set by the glass bulb: 5 mm for standard response and 3 mm for quick response.
Then pick the style: pendent, upright (DS-1 only), horizontal sidewall, or concealed pendent behind a flat cover plate (DS-C and DS-ECC). Inlets are 1 in. NPT or ISO 7-R 1, a 1 inch taper pipe thread, with 3/4 in. NPT also listed for the quick response DS-1 in TFP510. For corrosive atmospheres, the stainless steel DS-1 in TFP560 is the corrosion-resistant option, but Tyco asks that the end user check its suitability for the actual chemicals, humidity and temperature.
Approvals vary: Tyco lists UL and C-UL listing on all of these, with FM, LPCB, VdS and CE on the standard response DS-1 (TFP500) and FM, LPCB and CE on the quick response DS-1 (TFP510). FPS supplies, installs and maintains Tyco dry sprinklers in Bhopal and across MP and can help match the model to your cold room or unheated area.
