How to choose
A dry pipe valve is used where sprinkler pipes could freeze. The pipes beyond the valve hold compressed air or nitrogen instead of water; when a sprinkler opens and the pressure falls, the valve opens to let water into the piping and also triggers the fire alarm. The Tyco DPV-1 is a differential valve with an offset single clapper, a ductile iron body and external reset with no priming water. TFP1020 covers 2-1/2, 3, 4 and 6 inch (DN65, DN80, DN100 and DN150) valves rated 250 psi, which Tyco lists as UL and C-UL Listed and FM Approved. TFP1090 is the European Conformity trim edition rated 16 bar, which Tyco lists as FM, LPCB, VdS and CE approved.
An accelerator is a quick opening device. It senses the steady pressure drop after a sprinkler opens and sends system air to the intermediate chamber of the dry pipe valve, so the valve trips sooner. The ACC-1 is mechanical, made for the DPV-1, with an anti-flood device and ball float to keep water out of its working parts. The VIZOR (EDPA) and QRS-2 are electronic: Tyco states both can operate the valve within four seconds, with built-in high and low pressure supervision and battery back-up. The QRS-2 also serves double interlock electric/electric preaction systems with DV-5A valves and works with named releasing panels.
A dry system also needs a steady air or nitrogen supply. The AMD-1 reduces a higher pressure plant air or nitrogen supply to an adjustable 5 to 70 psi; the AMD-2 switches a small dedicated compressor on and off; the AMD-3 regulates nitrogen from a high pressure cylinder to 4 to 60 psi.
