How to choose

An extended coverage sprinkler is listed to protect a larger floor area than a standard coverage sprinkler, which can mean fewer heads in a room. For example, the EC-5 and EC-8 pendents cover up to 400 sq ft each in light hazard rooms, against 225 sq ft for a standard coverage sprinkler, and the SW-20 and SW-24 sidewalls cover up to 320 and 384 sq ft in ordinary hazard rooms, against 100 sq ft. These areas only apply when the system is designed to the listing, such as NFPA 13 (the US sprinkler installation standard), and most of these models are for hydraulically calculated systems, where pipe sizes and water demand are worked out for the actual layout.

Match the hazard class. Most models here are for light hazard (Tyco calls these ECLH), such as offices, hotels, churches and restaurant seating. The EC-11 and EC-14 cover light or ordinary hazard, and the SW-20 and SW-24 are extended coverage ordinary hazard (ECOH) sidewalls. The metric EC-HS is for systems built to VdS CEA 4001, in light hazard or ordinary hazard group 1.

Then choose the mounting. Upright and pendent heads (EC-11, EC-14, EC-8, EC-5) suit open ceilings, with recessed pendent versions for finished ceilings. Horizontal sidewall heads (TY-FRB, TY-FRL, EC-5, EC-HS, SW-20, SW-24) fit along a wall where pipes across the ceiling are not wanted. Concealed models hide the head behind a cover plate: ELOC, RFII and RFII-MRI pendents for ceilings, and CHEC and RFIII for walls. For long corridors, the EC-8C and RFII-C are listed for spaces up to 28 ft by 10 ft. QREC (quick response extended coverage) is the rating Tyco gives where a sprinkler's fast thermal response counts as quick response at extended coverage areas.

Approvals differ by model: Tyco lists UL and C-UL listing on most, FM approval on the EC-5, EC-8, EC-11, EC-14, TY-FRB and TY-FRL, UL listing only on the EC-8C and RFII-C, and VdS approval only on the EC-HS. FPS supplies, installs and maintains Tyco extended coverage sprinklers in Bhopal and across MP and can help check a layout against the data sheet.

Frequently asked questions

What is an extended coverage sprinkler?
It is a sprinkler listed to protect a larger floor area per head than a standard coverage sprinkler. Tyco's EC-5 and EC-8 pendents, for example, cover up to 400 sq ft in light hazard rooms, against 225 sq ft for standard coverage.
What does QREC mean on a Tyco data sheet?
QREC stands for quick response extended coverage. Tyco uses it for models such as the RFII, ELOC, CHEC, RFIII, TY-FRB and EC-5 sidewall, whose fast thermal response gives them a quick response rating at extended coverage areas.
Which Tyco sprinkler suits a long corridor?
The EC-8C pendent and the concealed RFII-C pendent are designed for long, narrow corridors and hallways in light hazard buildings, with a maximum coverage area of 28 ft by 10 ft. Tyco states they need fewer sprinklers and lower system pressure than traditional extended coverage sprinklers in these spaces.
Are there extended coverage sprinklers for ordinary hazard areas?
Yes. The EC-11 and EC-14 upright and pendent sprinklers are for light or ordinary hazard occupancies, and the SW-20 and SW-24 horizontal sidewalls are extended coverage ordinary hazard models.
Can I get a hidden extended coverage sprinkler for a hotel or office ceiling?
Yes. Tyco's concealed extended coverage options include the ELOC and RFII pendents for ceilings and the CHEC and RFIII sidewalls for walls, each with a flat or low profile cover plate.
Does FPS supply and install Tyco extended coverage sprinklers?
Yes. FPS supplies, installs and maintains Tyco extended coverage sprinklers in Bhopal and across Madhya Pradesh. Prices are on request: call or WhatsApp +91 92440 89060.
