How to choose
A reflective beam detector sends an invisible infrared beam across a room to a reflector on the opposite wall and raises an alarm when smoke weakens the beam. One beam detector can cover a large open area where many point detectors would otherwise be needed, which is why it suits warehouses, atriums and high ceilings.
Ravel lists three beam detector ranges. The RE-428 series has the transmitter and receiver in one housing, a built in laser and adjusting screws for alignment, drift compensation for dirt on the optics and sensitivity thresholds of 18%, 30% or 50%. It works with conventional panels and, through one RE-717MZ zone interface module per detector, with addressable panels. The EazyBeam aligns itself, tracks natural building movement, covers up to 50 m or up to 120 m with the long range reflector kit, and is rated IP55. The RE-401BD comes in 50 m and 100 m versions, with a long range kit and test filters as accessories, and Ravel states it is certified to UL 268, 7th edition.
A duct smoke detector is fixed on the outside of an air duct and draws air from inside it through a sampling tube, so smoke carried by the ventilation system is detected. Ravel's duct detector has a single aluminium sampling tube with a venturi pipe, a test hole on the cover and a 2 ft (0.6 m) tube option (RE-428DU-S2).
