An aspirating smoke detector (ASD) does not wait for smoke to reach it. An aspirator draws air continuously through small sampling holes in a pipe network into a detection chamber, where light scattering picks up very small amounts of smoke. This gives very early warning in rooms where an early alarm matters.
Start with the area. The FDA221 covers small business-critical rooms up to 500 m² and the FDA241 up to 800 m²; both use dual wavelength (blue and infrared) detection and can talk directly on an FDnet or C-NET loop with the optional FDCC221S communication interface, so no separate relay wiring is needed. The ASD+ models cover more: FDA222 up to 1600 m² (800 m² at Class A), FDA242 up to 3000 m² (1200 m² at Class A), the two-chamber FDA261 up to 3600 m² (2000 m² at Class A) and the FDA262 up to 6700 m² (3000 m² at Class A). The smaller Class A figures are the areas Siemens gives for Class A sensitivity.
