How to choose
For a foot valve, start with the pump suction size and the closing design. Kartar Valves makes swing type foot valves to IS 4038 with rubber seats and flanged ends drilled to IS 1538, in single door (K518, 50 mm to 150 mm in its product list) and double door (K519, from 200 mm) versions, and lists the range in grey cast iron or ductile iron, swing or lift type, from 15 mm to 300 mm across its versions. Ball type foot valves include the Kartar Valves ductile iron K521 (PN 1.6, 50 mm to 200 mm), the red Kartar Valves K-941 for fire pump suctions in PN 16, and the Sant Valves BFV, a Y pattern cast iron ball foot valve with a rubber coated ball, nitrile rubber seat ring and cast iron strainer, rated PN16 and flanged to IS 1538 from 80 mm to 250 mm. For small pumps, the Sant Valves IS-21 is a screwed gun metal foot valve from 15 mm to 100 mm.
For a strainer, choose the pattern. A Y type strainer holds its screen in an angled leg of the body, while a T type strainer holds it in a tee shaped body so the screen lifts out from the top. Kartar Valves (K528, 50 mm to 500 mm) and Sant Valves (CI-19, with a bolted bonnet) offer T type strainers, and all three makers offer Y type. Screens are stainless steel on most models: Sant Valves uses SS 304 screens with 1.2 mm perforations, Zoloto SS 304 screens with 3 mm holes and Kartar Valves SS mesh, with a brass or stainless steel screen on its bronze K-612.
Then match material, size and pressure. For flanged water mains, cast iron Y strainers come from Kartar Valves (K527 in PN 1.0 from 50 mm to 300 mm, and the red K-939 for fire lines in PN 16), Sant Valves (CI-16B, PN16, 25 mm to 300 mm) and Zoloto (1084 in PN 10 from 40 mm to 350 mm, 1084A in PN 16 from 40 mm to 250 mm), and the ductile iron Kartar Valves K527 D runs in PN 1.6 up to 400 mm. Check the flanges: the Kartar Valves K527 and K528 are drilled to IS 1538, while the Sant Valves CI-16B and the Zoloto strainers use BS 10 Table F. For small bore lines, choose a screwed strainer from 15 mm to 50 mm: the Sant Valves CI-16 in cast iron (up to 225°C) or BF in forged brass, or the Kartar Valves K-612 in bronze or K-105 in cast iron, the K-105 being listed for steam up to 13 kg/cm2 at 220°C. For higher pressure and temperature lines there are cast steel strainers: the Kartar Valves K403 (Class 150, 40 mm to 300 mm) and the Sant Valves CS-3A (40 mm to 200 mm, up to 400°C).
Zoloto also offers bronze ball valves with an integral SS 304 strainer (1085, and 1085A with a flare nut) for refrigeration and HVAC lines from 15 mm to 25 mm. Fit a strainer ahead of the pump, valve or equipment that debris could block, and leave room to open its cover and clean the screen during maintenance. Does a foot valve include a strainer?
