How to choose

Pick the valve by its job. A steam stop valve is a globe pattern valve used to shut off or control steam. Kartar's K-101 is a globe steam stop valve and K-102 is a junction steam stop valve in right angle pattern, where the inlet and outlet are at 90 degrees. Both are handwheel operated, with a bolted bonnet, outside screw and yoke, a rising stem with a back seat that seals the stem when the valve is fully open, and stainless steel parts to AISI 410. K-103 (horizontal) and K-104 (right angle) are lift check valves, in which a disc lifts with the flow and drops back to stop reverse flow.

Kartar lists all four cast iron valves as suitable for steam up to 13 kg/cm2, with a maximum working temperature of 220°C, and tests the bodies hydrostatically to 26 kg/cm2 (370 psig). K-101, K-103 and K-104 are flanged to DIN-2533 and K-102 to DIN-86251 / BS-5152, all raised face (RF) at PN-16. K-101 and K-103 run from 15 mm to 200 mm, and K-102 and K-104 from 15 mm to 100 mm.

A pressure reducing valve (PRV) brings a higher inlet pressure down to a steady lower outlet pressure. Kartar's compact piston type PRV has screwed female ends from 15 mm to 50 mm and a provision for a pressure gauge, and is listed for water and air. The website gives PN10, PN16 and PN25 versions for maximum inlet pressures of 10 bar, 16 bar and 25 bar, set at 3 bar unless specified. Kartar's product list gives the forged brass K608 in PN1.6 with an output from 2 kg/cm2 to 16 kg/cm2 and a maximum reduction to 1/4 of the inlet pressure, and a gunmetal K607 on request. Because the two sources state the outlet range differently, we confirm the setting range with the maker for your duty.

For small bore water lines, Kartar's gunmetal (bronze) globe valves are made to IS 778 in PN1.0 (CI-I): K604 with screwed ends from 15 mm to 100 mm, the K604-E wheel valve from 15 mm to 50 mm, and K606 with flanged ends from 15 mm to 100 mm. A safety valve opens automatically to release excess pressure; Kartar's K617 is a gunmetal, spring loaded safety valve with screwed ends and enclosed discharge, PN1.6, in 40 mm.

Frequently asked questions

What is a steam stop valve?
It is a globe pattern valve used to shut off or regulate steam. Kartar's K-101 and K-102 cast iron steam stop valves have bolted bonnets, rising stems with back seats and stainless steel (AISI 410) parts.
What steam pressure and temperature can Kartar cast iron steam valves handle?
Kartar lists its K-101 to K-104 valves as suitable for steam up to 13 kg/cm2, with a maximum working temperature of 220°C. The bodies are hydrostatically tested to 26 kg/cm2.
What does DIN-2533 RF PN-16 mean?
It describes the flanges: DIN-2533 is a German flange standard, RF means raised face, and PN-16 is the nominal pressure class.
What outlet pressure does the Kartar compact pressure reducing valve give?
The website says it is set at 3 bar unless another setting is specified, in PN10, PN16 and PN25. The product list gives the forged brass K608 an output from 2 kg/cm2 to 16 kg/cm2, so we confirm the range for your duty.
Which Kartar globe valves suit water lines?
The gunmetal globe valves K604, K604-E and K606 are made to IS 778 in PN1.0 (CI-I) with screwed or flanged ends. The cast iron K-101 to K-104 valves are listed for steam.
