Gate and sluice valves open and close by moving a gate, or wedge, across the pipe bore. Fully open, they leave a clear path for the water, and they are used to isolate sections of a main rather than to regulate flow. Kartar's cast iron sluice valves are made to IS 14846 with flanged ends drilled to IS 1538, an SS AISI 410 shaft and gunmetal (bronze) working parts, in 50 mm to 600 mm and in two pressure classes, PN1.0 and PN1.6.
Decide between rising and non rising stem. In a rising stem valve the stem moves up as the valve opens, so you can see at a glance whether it is open, which is useful on fire mains. A non rising stem valve keeps the stem at the same height and suits underground chambers; Kartar supplies it with a cap (K501, K503) for key operation or with a handwheel (K502, K504). The rising spindle version is K505 and K506. For red painted fire lines there is the K-931X extra strong non rising and the K-932 rising spindle sluice valve, both PN16 to IS 14846 in 50 mm to 200 mm, with higher sizes on request.
A resilient seated gate valve (RGV) closes a rubber covered wedge against the body for a tight shut off. Kartar's DI resilient seated gate valves have a pocket less body, toroidal sealing, an EPDM coated DI wedge and 250 micron epoxy coating, to IS 14846 and BS 5163 in PN 1.6: non rising with handwheel (K511, up to 1000 mm) or cap (K511C, up to 300 mm), rising stem (K511 R), the Aqua model (K511 EH, K511 EC) and the red K-933 for fire lines. Kartar's website also lists PN10 and PN16, ISI marking to IS:14846 and a CL125 version to BS:5163.
For higher pressure, the made to order extra strong K504-X (PN1.6, CI body), K504-XX (PN2.0, DI body) and K504-XXX (PN2.5, DI body) cover 80 mm to 200 mm, and cast steel gate valves are made to BS 1414 in Class 150 (K401) and Class 300 (K404). For small bore building lines choose the gunmetal gate valve to IS 778, screwed (K601) or flanged (K605), 15 mm to 100 mm. Add a K507 enclosed gear box for large valves, a K535 extension stem for buried valves, a K536 supervisory switch for monitored fire mains, or a K534 electrical actuator, which Kartar buys in and supplies.
