A foot valve sits at the bottom of a pump's suction pipe in a sump or tank. It lets water flow up to the pump and closes by itself if the flow reverses, so the suction line stays full of water and the pump stays primed. Kartar's cast iron foot valves are swing type with rubber seat, flanged ends drilled to IS 1538 and made to IS 4038: single door K518 from 50 mm to 150 mm and double door K519 from 200 mm to 400 mm (350 mm and 400 mm in development). Kartar's website also lists screwed swing type valves from 15 mm and lift type valves from 25 mm to 100 mm.
A ball type foot valve closes with a ball instead of a hinged door. Kartar's K521 has a DI body with an EPDM encapsulated DI ball, 250 micron epoxy coating and flanged ends, PN 1.6, from 50 mm to 200 mm; for fire pump suctions the red K-941 DI ball type foot valve is flanged in PN 16, from 50 mm to 200 mm, with higher sizes on request.
A strainer catches debris before it reaches pumps, valves and meters. In a Y type strainer the screen sits in an angled leg of the body; a T type strainer holds the screen in a tee shaped body. Kartar's flanged strainers have an SS mesh and a drain plug: cast iron Y type K527 in PN 1.0 (50 mm to 300 mm), DI Y type K527 D in PN 1.6 with 100 micron epoxy coating (50 mm to 400 mm) and the made to order K527-X in PN2.0, cast iron T type K528 in PN 1.0 (50 mm to 500 mm), the red K-939 cast iron Y type in PN 16 (50 mm to 200 mm) and the cast steel K403 with SS-304 mesh drilled to CL-150 (40 mm to 300 mm).
For small screwed lines, the bronze K-612 Y strainer has a brass or stainless steel perforated screen from 15 mm to 50 mm, and the cast iron K-105 has a stainless steel screen and BSP taper threads from 15 mm to 50 mm, suiting steam up to 13 kg/cm2 at a maximum working temperature of 220°C.
