1 kg and 500 g ABC fire extinguishers compared: all 13 models

Figures as each maker publishes them. Fire ratings are to IS 15683, or to EN 3 or UL where the model carries that approval: a higher number means a larger test fire put out, A for wood, paper and cloth, B for flammable liquids.

Where a 1 kg ABC fire extinguisher is used

A 1 kg unit weighs about 2 kg when full and most models empty in about 8 to 9 seconds, so it is for stopping a small fire as it starts, before it spreads: a car engine or wiring fire, a smouldering bin, a sparking socket. It is not meant to protect a whole room or shop; use 4 kg or 6 kg units for that.

Ceasefire's home and car ranges add a 500 g size with a thumb trigger, and the Art range comes in designer finishes for a living room. Kanex 1 kg units come with a vehicle or wall bracket.

  • Cars, SUVs and small vans
  • Homes and flats
  • Small office cabins and reception desks
  • Inverter, meter and switchboard corners at home
  • Small shops and kiosks as a second unit
  • Taxis and fleet vehicles

How to choose

For a car, pick a unit with a vehicle bracket and keep it fixed in the bracket, not loose on the floor. Kanex and Ceasefire list a working range of -30 C to +60 C, which covers a parked car in a Bhopal summer.

For the highest rating at 1 kg, pick MAP 90 powder: Kanex and Ceasefire list 1A 34B for their MAP 90 units against 1A 21B for MAP 40 or MAP 50. For a home, Ceasefire's Art range looks like decor rather than a red cylinder.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep a 1 kg ABC fire extinguisher in my car?
Yes, that is what most 1 kg and 500 g units are made for. Fix it in its bracket within the driver's reach, check the gauge every few months and have it serviced once a year. In hot weather keep it out of direct sun on the dashboard.
Is 500 g enough for a car?
A 500 g unit is lighter and smaller, but it empties in a few seconds. For a car, a 1 kg unit gives you more time on a small fire; for a larger vehicle such as a van or a bus, use 2 kg or more.
What is the price of a 1 kg ABC fire extinguisher in Bhopal?
It depends on the brand, the powder grade (MAP 50 or MAP 90), stored pressure or cartridge operation, the body and the quantity, and makers change their price lists often, so we quote each order instead of listing prices. Send the size, the brand if you have one in mind, and the quantity on WhatsApp at +91 92440 89060 and we will reply with the current price. Every supply is billed on a GST invoice.
Does a 1 kg ABC fire extinguisher need refilling?
Yes. It must be refilled after every use, even a short burst, and checked regularly: the seal should be intact, the service label in date and, on stored pressure units, the gauge needle in the green band. We refill and pressure test ABC extinguishers of every brand in Bhopal, see fire extinguisher refilling.
How many 1 kg fire extinguishers does my building need?
That depends on the floor area, the kind of fire risk and the rules that apply to the building: IS 2190, the National Building Code and, for a Fire NOC, the MP Fire Department. Our engineers work it out on a free site visit in Bhopal and tell you the number, size and type for each floor.
