Start with the overhead anchor, chosen for the opening and what surrounds it. For manholes and tanks, the portable tripod with a dual pulley head and the lighter aluminium Megapod with telescopic legs are stated to EN 795:2012 Type B and IS 3521(Part 7):2021, the Hexapod covers larger openings below ground and two person rescue, and the H-Base davit breaks down into five parts and goes together without tools. Where the same opening is used often, the floor, wall and flush mounted davits and the extendable pole hoist davit are stated to EN 795:2012 Type A, and the stainless steel K-Pod cantilever swivels a full circle and mounts on a floor, wall or vehicle top. With no structure to fix to, the hitch mounting davit fits a 2 inch (51.0 mm) vehicle tow hitch receiver, and the dead weight davit stands on a wheeled trolley of 750 kg in total; both are stated to EN 795:2012 Type E.
Next pick the winch or lifting device. Karam's EN 1496:2017 Class A winches, PN801(DP), PN801(40)(DP) and PN817(DP), run on 4.8 mm galvanized steel wire rope and end in a PN112 screw locking karabiner or a PN162 swivel snap hook, while the Class B PN818 offers 10.5 mm kernmantle rope, 6.0 mm galvanized steel wire rope or 6.0 mm synthetic rope. The hitch mounting davit works with the PN817(DP) and PN818(DP) winches through the SA17(26) bracket. For lifting a person, the ratchet hauling system raises a worker hanging in a harness in steps without slipping back, and the Evac-R rope rescue device has an automatic, redundant brake for up to 3 users; for loads, the material hauling system lifts or lowers at a 3:1 or 5:1 ratio.
For rope access and rope rescue, match the device to the task and the rope. The Grip Descender and the Descender Jumper are self braking and stop if the handle is released or squeezed too hard, the Jumper also works for ascent, and the Figure of 8 suits belaying and lowering with speed controlled on the brake strand; all three are stated to EN 12841:2006 Type C. Rope clamps for ascent and hauling, in right hand, left hand and harness mounted versions, are stated to EN 567:2013 and EN 12841:2006 Type B. Pulleys come for 16 mm or 12 mm rope, as single, double and tandem versions with aluminium or stainless steel sheaves on dry or ball bearings, and the rigging plate and both tandem pulleys have a 45 kN minimum breaking strength.
Finally, plan how a casualty will be moved and whether a kit saves time on site. The evacuation triangle (EN 1498:2006) fits a seated or standing casualty, the Respac recovery stretcher is 8.0 ft long and works vertically or horizontally, and the rescue spreader bar is used with a Karam harness to raise or lower a person. For long suspended work, the pilot chair (EN 1498:1996) and the Easy Seat (EN 1498:2006 Class B), which clips to the ventral D-ring of the harness, give a seated position. Karam's kits gather the parts for one job: confined space entry and egress kits built on the K-Pod or the tripod, a basic rope access rescue kit, a hauling and lowering kit with a 3 m telescopic rescue pole, a self rescue ladder system with a 6 metre ladder, tower rescue and climbing kits, painter kits and a window cleaning kit, with rope lengths chosen to suit the site.
