Foam proportioning means mixing foam concentrate into the fire water at a set ratio, such as 3% or 6%, to make foam solution. Bladder tanks are very commonly used in low expansion foam systems: a pressure rated tank holds the concentrate inside a rubber bladder, incoming fire water squeezes the bladder, and a ratio controller meters the concentrate into the water line. HD offers it as a single tank, as dual tanks on a skid with one on standby, with a pre-assembled deluge valve, or with several proportioning lines serving separate hazard zones.
A balanced pressure system uses a foam concentrate pump instead. The inline balanced pressure proportioner (ILBP) works with a positive displacement concentrate pump and keeps the dose accurate across a wide range of flow and pressure, even when several injection points run at different pressures from one concentrate line. HD's skid mounted balanced pressure system packs the pump, ratio controller, by-pass valve, relief valve and electricals on one frame, covering 270 to 18500 lpm (71 to 4887 gpm) without manual adjustment. Concentrate for these systems is kept in an atmospheric storage tank.
An inline foam inductor gives a simple method of proportioning for constant flow applications. It draws concentrate into the water stream and can work against a back pressure of up to 65% of its inlet pressure, and HD calibrates and tests each unit for flow and induction rate. The portable IE225 and IE450 inductors do the same job on mobile foam units and in manual fire fighting.
Finally, confirm materials and approvals. Most items come in bronze or stainless steel, and tanks in carbon steel or stainless steel. Bladder tanks can be supplied UL Listed, FM Approved or CE marked when specified in the order. Send us the foam system flow, concentrate type and hazard details.
