How to choose

Start with what the specification asks for. Where a fire line calls for listed valves, HD Fire offers a ductile iron valve that is UL Listed and FM Approved, rated 300 psi, from 2 to 12 inch in wafer, lugged or grooved ends with an integral tamper switch, and New Age offers UL Listed grooved and wafer valves designed to API 609, rated 300 psi (21 bar), from 2½ to 12 inch. Where an Indian standard is asked for, Sant Valves, Kartar Valves and Zoloto make wafer valves to IS 13095, and many are ISI marked: the Sant Valves CR-21 and CR-22 series, the red Kartar Valves K-934 and K-935 for fire lines, and Zoloto 1078 models up to 300 mm.

Then pick a pressure rating at or above the highest pressure the pump can produce in that line, and read how each maker writes it. Sant Valves rates its valves PN 10, PN 16, PN 20 or PN 25, with the ductile iron CR-28D at PN 25 for higher pressure water and oil lines. Zoloto states ratings in MPa, so its PN 1.0, PN 1.6 and PN 2.5 models are rated 1.0 MPa, 1.6 MPa and 2.5 MPa. Kartar Valves lists PN 1.0 on its K Line, Aqualine and Slimline series, PN 1.6 on the double eccentric K716, PN 2.0 on the extra strong K701-XS and K701-XD (made to order), PN 2.5 on the cast steel K713 and PN 16 on the red K-934 and K-935.

Next match the ends and size to the pipework. Wafer valves clamp between two flanges, so check the flanges each maker lists: Sant Valves lists BS 10 Table D/E and ASME B 16.1 Class 125, Zoloto lists BS 10, DIN, PN 10 to PN 40, ASA 150 / 300, IS 778, IS 6392 and IS 1538, and New Age gives ASME B16.1 face to face dimensions. Kartar Valves also offers a two lug wafer (K701N, K702N) and double flanged valves with a centre line disc (K714, K715) or a double eccentric disc (K716, 80 mm to 1000 mm). For grooved pipe there are HD Fire, New Age (grooves to AWWA C606) and the Sant Valves D81X4 / D381X4 (grooves to ISO 6182, 50 mm to 377 mm). Wafer ranges start at 25 mm with Kartar Valves and reach 600 mm with Sant Valves, Kartar Valves and Zoloto.

Finally choose the materials and how the valve is worked. Discs come in stainless steel (CF8 or SS 304, CF8M or 316) or ductile and SG iron, with nitrile or EPDM linings, and Zoloto also lists neoprene, Viton and silicone. Kartar Valves (K703, K704) offers a replaceable liner and Sant Valves (BFY, BFX) a replaceable seat and disc, so a worn seat can be renewed without changing the valve. Small sizes are lever operated and large sizes gear operated, and for remote or automatic duty Sant Valves, Kartar Valves and Zoloto offer pneumatic and electric actuators: Zoloto electrical actuators work with BMS and PLC control, and Kartar Valves electrical actuators run on 3 phase 415V or single phase 220V supply.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between wafer, lugged, grooved and double flanged butterfly valves?
A wafer valve clamps between two pipe flanges, a lugged valve carries lugs for the flange bolts, a grooved valve joins grooved pipe with couplings, and a double flanged valve has its own flanges bolted to the pipe flanges. HD Fire offers wafer, lugged and grooved ends, Sant Valves and New Age offer wafer and grooved, Zoloto offers wafer, and Kartar Valves offers wafer, two lug and double flanged types.
Why do some valves say PN 1.6 and others PN 16?
Makers write the rating in different forms. Zoloto states its ratings in MPa, so its PN 1.6 means 1.6 MPa, the same pressure that Sant Valves writes as PN 16, while New Age and HD Fire give 300 psi. Compare the rating each maker states against the highest pressure in your line.
Are any of these butterfly valves UL Listed or FM Approved?
Yes. The HD Fire ductile iron butterfly valve with tamper switch is UL Listed and FM Approved, and the New Age grooved and wafer valves are UL Listed, all rated 300 psi. Kartar Valves also supplies a supervisory switch with position indicator in a UL/FM approved version, which is fitted only with a gear.
What does IS 13095 mean on a butterfly valve?
IS 13095 is the Indian standard that the Sant Valves, Kartar Valves and Zoloto wafer ranges are made to. Several models are also ISI marked, such as the Sant Valves CR-21 and CR-22 series, the red Kartar Valves K-934 and K-935, and Zoloto 1078 models up to 300 mm.
How can a control room tell whether a butterfly valve is open or shut?
Choose a valve with a position signal: the HD Fire valve has an integral tamper switch, the Sant Valves CIBFL has a limit switch, Zoloto electrical actuators give micro switch position feedback, and Kartar Valves supplies a supervisory switch with position indicator (K720).
