Start with the risk. Water extinguishers are for Class A fires in solids such as wood, paper and cloth: water cools the burning material and the area around it. Foam extinguishers cover Class A and Class B fires, forming a blanket over burning liquids such as oil and petrol that cuts off oxygen. Spray models pass the agent through a special nozzle as a fine spray, which Ceasefire rates for Class F cooking oil fires and for live electrical equipment up to 1000 V from a distance of 1 metre.
Then pick the model and how it is pressurised. Jet models throw a solid stream for reach, aspirating foam models draw air into the discharge to form foam, and spray models give finer, wider coverage. Stored pressure units keep the charge in the cylinder with a gauge to check it, while cartridge type units use a CO2 cartridge that pressurises the body only when the unit is used. For large open risks, the wheeled units of 50 ltr and 100 ltr (EN approved) or 60 ltr (BIS, IS 16018) throw more than 6 m.
Finally match the approval and your agent policy. BIS models are made to IS 15683 (portables) or IS 16018 (wheeled), and the EN approved range carries LPCB, BSI Kitemark, PED and MED marks. If your site avoids PFAS and PFOA chemicals, choose the fluorine free foam portable or the fluorine free foam mist extinguisher.
