An intrinsically safe open-area sounder for I.S. signalling in fire, security and process control applications.
Start with the system. The Soteria and Discovery base sounders, the Intelligent Open-Area range and the Discovery and XP95 sounders and sounder bases are addressable loop devices; the Intelligent range works natively across XP95, Discovery and CoreProtocol, and many Discovery and XP95 devices are listed for all three, so check the exact model against your panel. The Conventional Open-Area sounders, the Sonos Pulse conventional VADs and the 6 inch fire bell are for conventional sounder circuits, and the Conventional I.S. Open-Area Sounder is for intrinsically safe signalling.
Then choose how the device warns people. A sounder gives an audible alarm. A VID (visual indicator device) adds a flashing beacon as a supplementary signal, while a VAD (visual alarm device) is a flashing light certified to EN 54-23 for places where sounders may not be heard, such as noisy workshops and machine rooms or areas used by deaf or hearing impaired people. A sounder VAD combines both. EN 54-3 is the European standard for fire alarm sounders.
EN 54-23 VADs carry a category and a coverage code. C means ceiling mounted, W wall mounted, and O is the open category where the maker defines the coverage. In a code such as W-2.4-6 or C-3-15, the first number is the maximum mounting height in metres and the second is the size of the area covered in metres: the width of a square room for W, the diameter of the covered area for C. The Apollo VADs here include W-2.4-6, W-3.1-10, W-3.1-11.3, C-3-8 and C-3-15 models.
Finally check sound output, tones and mounting. The XP95 open-area sounders offer 92 or 100 dB(A), the Conventional Open-Area Sounder up to 106 dB(A) with 32 tones, and the XP95 sounder bases volume ranges of 55 to 75 or 75 to 91 dB(A). Isolating versions include a short circuit isolator, and IP65 models suit damp or dusty areas. FPS supplies, installs and maintains Apollo sounders and VADs in Bhopal and across Madhya Pradesh.
