What an upright sprinkler is
An upright head screws into the top of the branch pipe and points up. Its deflector sits above the head and throws water up against the ceiling and out in a round pattern, so the water also wets the underside of the roof and the beams before it falls on the fire.
Because it sits on top of the pipe, an upright head keeps the pipe from blocking its own spray and is less likely to be knocked than a head hanging below. It is the normal choice wherever pipes are left exposed: industrial sheds, warehouses, plant rooms, car parks and the void above a false ceiling.
The K factor, response and temperature are chosen as for any head: K 5.6 (K80) for light hazard, K 8.0 (K115) and larger for ordinary hazard and storage, and 68°C as the standard rating. Upright heads must only be fitted facing up.

Standard and quick response upright sprinklers
The everyday upright head for exposed pipes. HD Fire and New Age heads are UL Listed, several HD Fire heads also FM Approved, Kartar K908.I and Savemax heads are ISI marked, and Tyco TY-B, TY-FRB, TY-L and TY-FRL heads carry UL, FM and LPCB approvals as listed.
Storage, control mode and ESFR upright sprinklers
For high piled and racked storage. Tyco lists upright ESFR heads, control mode specific application heads (Ultra K17, LD and EC-25), K11.2 and K16.8 storage heads and the Ultra K34, plus intermediate level heads for use inside racks.
Extended coverage upright sprinklers
Tyco EC-11 and EC-14 heads cover a larger area each in light and ordinary hazard, so fewer heads and less pipe are needed.

How to choose
Use an upright head wherever the pipe is exposed and there is room above it: a pendent head is used below a false ceiling and a sidewall head on a wall.
Match the K factor, response and temperature to the design. In storage, the goods, how they are stored and the height of the stack set the head, and ESFR heads can avoid sprinklers inside the racks for listed goods and heights.
Add guards where forklifts or stock could knock a head, and keep spare heads of each type on site in a spare sprinkler cabinet.
