How to choose
A check valve, also called a non return valve (NRV), lets water flow one way and closes by itself when the flow reverses, for example when a pump stops. Zoloto makes three main types. Lift check valves have a disc that rises off its seat with the flow and drops back when it stops; Zoloto's bronze versions use a mushroom shaped metal disc guided in the body and bonnet. Swing check valves (the cast iron 1083 series) have a hinged rubber flap. Dual plate wafer valves (1082 and 1082A) have two spring assisted half plates that start to close as soon as the flow slows, which limits water hammer.
Match the valve to the pipe position. The 1010, 1011, 1012, 1013, 1014, 1038 and 1039 are for horizontal lines only, and the 1009 and 1037 are for vertical lines only. The forged brass 1009A suits both, the 1010A is an angle pattern valve, and the cast iron swing NRVs can be installed horizontally or vertically.
Check the standard and rating. The 1037, 1038 and 1039 are made to IS 778 Class 1 and carry the ISI mark. The cast iron swing NRVs are made to IS 5312 Part 1 and ISI marked, with flanges to IS 1538, in PN 1.0 or PN 1.6, and the 1083B and 1083C add a bypass arrangement. The dual plate valves follow API 594 and fit between flanges drilled to ANSI B Class 125 or ASME B Class 150.
Check the temperature. The No.9 valves (1013 and 1014) have renewable SS 410 working parts, a 225°C limit and a steam working pressure of 10.55 kg/cm²g (150 psig). Is a check valve the same as a non return valve?
Yes. Both names describe a valve that lets flow pass one way and closes on its own when the flow reverses. In India, the larger flanged cast iron type is usually called an NRV.
Which Zoloto check valves are ISI marked?
The bronze 1037, 1038 and 1039 made to IS 778 Class 1, and the cast iron swing NRVs 1083, 1083A, 1083B and 1083C made to IS 5312 Part 1, are listed with the ISI mark.
What is a dual plate wafer check valve?
It is a slim check valve that fits between two pipe flanges and closes with two spring assisted half plates instead of one large disc. Zoloto makes it in cast iron (1082, up to 350 mm) and ductile iron (1082A, up to 600 mm), designed to API 594.
Can a horizontal check valve be fitted in a vertical pipe?
No. Zoloto marks the 1010, 1011, 1012, 1013, 1014, 1038 and 1039 for horizontal lines only. For vertical lines use the 1009 or 1037, the 1009A which suits both, or a cast iron swing NRV.
What do PN 1.0 and PN 1.6 mean on the cast iron NRVs?
They are the nominal pressure classes under IS 5312 Part 1: PN 1.0 is the 1.0 MPa class and PN 1.6 the higher 1.6 MPa class. Choose the class that covers the working pressure of your line, and FPS can help you check it.
