How to choose
A globe valve closes by pressing a disc down onto a seat, so it can be set part open to control flow, which a gate valve should not be. The trade off is a higher pressure drop, so use globe valves where regulation or frequent operation matters, and gate valves for plain isolation.
For bronze valves, pick the class and ends first. Sant's IS series follows IS 778: Class 1 models are body tested at 1.5 MPa, Class 2 at 2.4 MPa, and the IS-13 is Class 3 with a 50 kg/cm² body test. Screwed valves have female threads to IS 554 (parallel) or BSP to BS 21, and flanged ones have IS 778 or BS 10 flanges. The SBM series offers No.4, No.5, No.8 and No.9 valves in standard and medium patterns.
Where a valve will be serviced often, look at the seat and disc. Most bronze models here have an integral seat with a renewable disc. The SBM-14 and SBM-15 union bonnet valves are rated PN 25 and have a renewable seat and disc with SS AISI410 trim, and Sant lists them for water, oil and steam.
For high pressure industrial lines, choose steel. The forged steel FSV series covers Class 800 (FSV-6A screwed NPT, FSV-6B socket weld), Class 1500 (FSV-9A socket weld) and Class 600 flanged (FSV-12), and the cast steel CS-10A is Class 600 flanged to BS 1873.
