How to choose
Pick the pattern first. Wafer check valves (dual plate, single plate and disc types) are short bodies that clamp between two pipe flanges; the dual plate and disc types are spring loaded so they shut quickly when flow stops. Swing check or reflux valves have a hinged disc in a full flanged body; Sant's CR-31 and CR-31A reflux valves follow IS 5312, the Indian Standard for swing check type reflux valves, and are flanged to IS 1538 from 50 mm to 300 mm. Lift check valves have a disc that lifts off its seat and are used on smaller bores.
Match the valve to the pipe position. Horizontal lift checks go in horizontal pipes, vertical lift checks (IS-8, SBM-13) in pipes with upward flow, and the IS-23 right angle lift check turns the line through a corner. The BUCV universal check valve and the BSCV swing check are small brass valves with BSP threads.
Then choose the pressure rating. Reflux valves come in PN10 (CR-31) or PN16 (CR-31A). Dual plate wafer valves come in PN-16 with cast iron body (DP, DP-1A) or PN-25 with ductile iron body (DP2). Bronze IS series valves follow IS 778: Class 1 is body tested at 1.5 MPa and Class 2 at 2.4 MPa. For high pressure plant lines there are forged steel FSV valves in Class 800 and Class 1500 and the CS-8A cast steel swing check with Class-300 flanges.

What is the difference between a check valve, a non return valve and a reflux valve?
They are three names for valves that let water flow one way only. In India, reflux valve usually means a flanged swing check type non return valve on a water main, such as Sant's CR-31 and CR-31A to IS 5312.
Why choose a dual plate wafer check valve?
A dual plate wafer valve is short and light because it sits between two flanges, and its spring loaded plates close quickly when the flow stops. Sant makes them from 50 mm to 400 mm in PN-16 and PN-25.
Which Sant check valves are ISI marked?
The IS-8, IS-14, IS-14A, IS-15, IS-15A and IS-16 bronze check valves are made to IS 778 and ISI marked, in Class 1 or Class 2 with screwed or flanged ends.
Can I fit a lift check valve in a vertical pipe?
Only a vertical lift check, such as Sant's IS-8 or SBM-13, is meant for a vertical pipe with upward flow. Horizontal lift checks must be fitted in horizontal lines.
Which check valves suit a fire pump delivery line?
Both swing check reflux valves and dual plate wafer valves are used on pump delivery lines; the choice depends on pipe size, space and system pressure. Where the consultant asks for UL or FM listed valves, FPS supplies Sant's listed DH77X, H44X2 or H84X instead.
