Start with what the specification asks for. Where a fire main calls for listed valves, HD Fire offers OS&Y and NRS resilient wedge gate valves that are UL Listed and FM Approved, rated 21 bar (300 psi), from 50 to 300 mm, and New Age offers UL Listed OS&Y and NRS gate valves to AWWA C515 at 200 psi or 300 psi, from 2 to 12 inch. Where an Indian standard is asked for, Sant Valves, Kartar Valves and Zoloto make cast iron and ductile iron sluice valves to IS 14846, with ISI marked models such as the Sant Valves CR-32 and CR-32B, the Zoloto 1079A, 1079B and 1096 and the Kartar Valves K511.
Then match the pressure rating and size, choosing a rating that covers the highest pressure your pump can produce in that line. IS 14846 sluice valves come in two pressure classes, written PN1.0 and PN1.6 by Kartar Valves and Zoloto and PN 10 and PN 16 by Sant Valves. Kartar Valves also makes the extra strong K504-X series to order up to PN2.5, and the red K-931X, K-932 and K-933 for fire lines in PN 16. Sizes reach 600 mm on the Kartar Valves CI sluice valves and the Zoloto 1079A, and 1000 mm on the Kartar Valves K511, while the Sant Valves sluice valves run from 50 mm to 300 mm. For high pressure duty there are cast steel gate valves (Kartar Valves to BS 1414 in Class 150 and Class 300, Sant Valves CS-7B to API 600 in Class 600) and Sant Valves forged steel valves to API 602 from 10 mm to 40 mm.
Choose a rising or non rising stem. An OS&Y (outside screw and yoke) or rising stem valve shows at a glance whether it is open or shut, which helps on fire mains where a closed valve must be noticed: HD Fire, New Age, Kartar Valves (K505, K506, K511 R, K-932), Sant Valves (CR-32A, CR-19B) and Zoloto (1079C, 1079D) all offer one. A non rising stem needs less headroom and suits valve chambers and buried valves. For these, HD Fire offers UL Listed and FM Approved vertical (HD-IP) and wall (HD-WP) post indicators for its NRS valves from 4 to 24 inch, and Kartar Valves offers an extension stem (K535), an enclosed gear box (K507), a three phase electrical actuator (K534) and a supervisory switch (K536) in UL/FM approved or non UL/FM versions.
Finally pick the seat, material and ends. Resilient seated valves, such as the HD Fire resilient wedge valves, the Kartar Valves K511 series and K-933 and the Sant Valves RSV, seal with an EPDM covered wedge, while metal seated valves close a solid wedge onto a renewable or integral seat. Ends can be flanged to IS 1538, ANSI B16.1 Class 125 or BS EN 1092 PN16, grooved to AWWA C606 (New Age), or flanged at one end and grooved at the other. For small bore lines, Sant Valves, Kartar Valves and Zoloto offer gun metal and bronze gate valves to IS 778 from 8 mm to 100 mm, screwed or flanged, many of them ISI marked, and Zoloto adds a compact hex type and a peg type to BS EN 12288.
