A swing check valve that lets water flow one way only, opening when flow pressure exceeds its cracking pressure and closing promptly when flow stops or reverses, to protect the system from back flow and pressure surges. It is UL Listed and FM Approved.
Start with the closing design. Dual plate wafer check valves close with two spring loaded half plates in a short body clamped between flanges, so they take little space in a pump room header: Sant Valves (DP, DP-1A, DP2), Kartar Valves (K711, K712 and the red K-937 for fire lines) and Zoloto (1082 in cast iron, 1082A in ductile iron, both designed to API 594) offer them. Swing check or reflux valves close with a hinged disc in a flanged body: HD Fire offers a ductile iron swing check valve that is UL Listed and FM Approved, rated 300 psi, in flanged and grooved types, and Sant Valves, Kartar Valves and Zoloto make swing NRVs to IS 5312. Kartar Valves also offers a ball type check valve (K520), compact single door wafer check valves (K710, K-936) and a stainless steel non slam check valve (K721).
Next match the size and pressure rating to the line, and choose a rating that covers the highest pressure your pump can produce. Swing NRVs to IS 5312 come in PN 1.0 and PN 1.6 from Kartar Valves (K514 to K517, 50 mm to 500 mm) and Zoloto (1083, 1083A, 50 mm to 300 mm), in PN10 and PN16 from Sant Valves (CR-31, CR-31A), and in PN 16 as the red Kartar Valves K-940. Dual plate valves reach 600 mm with the Zoloto 1082A and PN-25 with the Sant Valves DP2. For grooved pipework there are the HD Fire swing check and the Sant Valves DH87X double door check valve, PN16, from 219.1 mm to 377 mm. The Zoloto 1083B and 1083C add a bypass around the main valve.
For small bore lines, choose bronze, gun metal or brass. Sant Valves and Zoloto offer lift and swing check valves to IS 778 Class 1 and Class 2, many of them ISI marked, from 8 mm to 100 mm, and Kartar Valves offers gunmetal horizontal (K602) and vertical (K603) check valves to IS 778 from 15 mm to 100 mm. Sant Valves also lists brass check valves from 15 mm to 50 mm, and the Zoloto No.9 (1013, 1014) has SS 410 working parts for steam up to 225°C. For high pressure duty there are cast steel swing check valves to BS 1868 (Kartar Valves Class 150 and Class 300, Sant Valves CS-8A Class-300), forged steel lift check valves to BS 5352/API 602 (Sant Valves Class 800 and Class 1500) and stainless steel wafer check valves rated PN-40 (Sant Valves IC-2, Kartar Valves K721).
Finally match the ends and the pipe direction. Wafer bodies clamp between flanges, such as ASME B 16.5 Class-150 for the Sant Valves dual plate valves and ANSI B Class 125 / ASME B Class 150 for the Zoloto ones. IS 5312 valves have IS 1538 flanges, and bronze valves come flanged to BS 10 Table D or F or IS 778, or screwed with BS 21 or IS 554 threads. Fit horizontal lift check valves only in horizontal lines, and use a vertical type, such as the Sant Valves SBM-13 or IS-8, the Kartar Valves K603 or the Zoloto 1009 and 1037, in vertical pipes with upward flow.
